  • Sports Day

    Fri 23 Jun 2023

Another fantastic Sports Day at Englefield. The sun shone, picnics were enjoyed, everyone supported well and Pebbles the tortoise even joined in by meeting some of our toddlers.

Our older pupils started the day with the Englefield Mile. Meanwhile, Key Stage 1 did a carousel of activities on the school field - target-throwing, vortex and doing a standing jump. After morning break, Key Stage 2 took over on the field and did a range of activities to test their sporting skills.

At noon, parents arrived with picnics and chairs and families set up camp on the school field - such a lovely atmosphere.

Races got underway after a rousing parade of our four Houses around the field. Sprints, football dribble, obstacle courses and egg and spoon were all cheered on by the crowds. The last pupil race was the sprint relay which was incredibly fast, especially given the hot conditions.

While we waited for the scores to be added up, the children enjoyed an ice lolly whilst the toddlers had a running race and the parents entered the egg and spoon - specially designed to slow them down...they are a very competitive bunch!

The final results showed that  Athena triumphed on the day with Poseidon coming in second, Demeter third and Hermes fourth.

  • Englefield Countryside Day

    Wed 14 Jun 2023

Years 3 and 4 had a really enjoyable and educational time at the Englefield Countryside Day.

We started with a tour of Englefield House and heard fascinating stories about some of the artwork. Next we found out about bats and how we can all help to look after these important creatures by having bat-friendly gardens. Rev Julia took us through a baptism and marriage in the church to demonstrate the importance of community - we were also treated to a drink and a biscuit! Before lunch, we visited the walled garden to find out how to make good compost and we had a tour of the current fruit and veg being grown...the peaches looked delicious!

After lunch, we helped to build a 'leaky dam' with the Pangbourne Flood Group after finding out the importance of slowing down the flow of some local rivers. We then heard from the Englefield carpenters how wax can help a screw go in more easily. Finally we enjoyed a fascinating talk about bees and managed to spot some new bees emerging from their casing.

All in all a great day. Thank you Englefield Estate!

  • Farewell to our feathered friends

    Fri 09 Jun 2023

Our chicks are now 4 weeks old and are ready to move to their permanent outdoor home. We have loved having them in school, watching them grow and flourish; what a special opportunity!

Thank you so much to Mrs Elliott for letting us look after them for so long.

  • Girls Football Tournament

    Fri 09 Jun 2023

Well done to the 9 girls who took part in the Tilehurst Panthers' Girls Football Tournament in Linear Park yesterday. The girls played well together and there was some impressive teamwork.

The team took part in 5 matches: winning two, drawing one and losing two.

The team was well supported by parents and siblings and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event.

  • Outdoor Chick Adventures!

    Wed 07 Jun 2023

Our eleven chicks had fun enjoying the sun out in the FS2 garden today. It won't be long before we say goodbye to them as they are now getting to big for their indoor cage and need to learn to live outdoors.

  • Bradfield Kwik Cricket

    Wed 07 Jun 2023

Ten pupils from Years 3 to 6 spent a wonderful day in the splendid grounds of Bradfield College today; they were taking part in a Kwik Cricket Festival. The children spent some time at school first having some great training from Will and practising the skills they have been learning in their PE sessions. When we got to Bradfield, we were placed in a tournament with four other schools. The children played so well in their teams, supporting each other and confidently batting, bowling and fielding. This was greatly helped by the Bradfield College pupils who were umpiring and providing informal coaching as the games went on. As always, on these occasions, their skills improved dramatically as the day went on.

We won two games, drew on runs on the third game (but lost on wickets), and lost the final game.

Top batsman was Will with a total of 84 runs (including five 6s and ten 4s); star catcher was Inti with two amazing jumping catches; other notable fielders were Elliot with a catch and two run outs and Pharrell with a catch and a run out.

The children had a fabulous time and their enjoyment of cricket was clear to see.

  • A Trip to the Rainforest

    Tue 06 Jun 2023

On Tuesday 6th June, FS2, Year1 and 2 went to the Living Rainforest for the day. As part of the day, the children had the chance to take part in an excellent workshop and tour lead by a Rainforest Expert, who explained in detail how the plants and animals are adapted to live in the rainforest environment. The children spent the rest of the day exploring further the plants and animals that had been pointed out on their tour.

    Here's what FS2 really liked:

Matilda " I liked the stick insects because they can grow an extra leg!"

Jessica "I liked the emerald tree python because it has a pattern on its back".

Eoin "I liked the snake best because it is green and hides in the leaves".

Oscar "I liked the leaf insects best because they were so well camouflaged".
