  • Rhos-Y-Gwaliau Days 1 and 2

    Tue 31 Oct 2023

Our Years 5 and 6 children are having a truly adventurous time in North Wales,

After a long journey, they arrived in time for a night walk which set the tone for the week ahead. Everyone was exhausted and managed to get to sleep at a good time.

The next day included a carousel of activities for the groups which included canoeing, gorge-walking and a trip down a slate mine.

We look forward to hearing about more adventures soon!

  • Pumpkin Fun!

    Thu 19 Oct 2023

Thank you to our Chair of Governors, Chris Gittins for supplying us with so many pumpkins - a bumper year!

The large pumpkin at the front of the school weighed in at  11.9kg. The winners of the ‘Guess the Weight’ competition were:

    1. Kaya (Y2) with 12kg

    2. Jack (Y3) and Robyn (FS2) with 9kg

    3. Alice (Y4) with 16kg

Each class had a competition to design the best ‘non-scary’ decoration for their pumpkins. The class winners were:

    FS2/Y1: Robyn and Malina

    Y1/2:  Billy and Luca

    Y3/4: Max and Katryn

    Y5/6: Pippa and Stanley

They each received a pumpkin to take home to carve.

  • Black History Week

    Thu 19 Oct 2023

All classes have spent time this week finding out about key figures and events from the Civil Rights Movement and beyond.

KS1 have been researching Mary Seacole. Rome and Luca explained: ‘We learned that when Mary Seacole died, a statue was made in London to remember her because she was a really special person in the Crimean War.’ Lola presented her learning clearly. Sofia brought in a book written by Floella Benjamin which the children enjoyed hearing.

Years 3 and 4 have been finding out about Dr Martin Luther King Junior. They found out about the ‘I have a dream…’ speech, thought about the current issues that mattered to them and then wrote their own speeches.

I have a dream that one day the Russia and Ukraine war will stop.

I have a dream that everyone will have peace.

I have a dream that we will plant more trees.

I have a dream that the whole world will love everyone and the world.

    Damian Year 3

Year 5/6 have been learning about Nelson Mandela. Bo wrote: ‘For Black History Week in Years 5 and 6 we read a book written about Nelson Mandela and learnt about how he spent his whole life fighting for freedom and protesting against racism. The next day we did a comprehension and read another text. Then we drew round Nelson Mandela’s face and wrote sentences instead of drawing lines. It was very tricky but some people did it really well.’ See Amelia’s picture overleaf.

  • Bassistry Arts

    Thu 19 Oct 2023

All classes enjoyed a music and rhythm workshop with Marcel and Philippe before coming together for a whole school assembly at the end of the day. This is such a special day in our school calendar and some of the children remember their songs from year to year!

  • The Oratory Maths Challenge

    Thu 12 Oct 2023

Four Year 5 pupils spent the morning and lunchtime at The Oratory with Mrs Kelley. They were competing against lots of other schools, solving maths problems and puzzles. Elliot and Rafa said it was very tricky but a good outcome.

  • Our Harvest Celebration

    Mon 02 Oct 2023

The church was full this morning as we celebrated Harvest as a school community. Songs were sung, poems performed and readings and prayers shared. Rev Julia did a lovely talk about the importance of sharing food fairly across the globe.

We collected lots of tins and packets which two parents kindly took to the West Berkshire Food Bank collection point. Hopefully this has reminded the children of the benefits to all, including themselves. of doing kind acts for others.

  • St Mark's Harvest Festival

    Sun 01 Oct 2023

Well done and thank you to the fourteen chiddren who came to church today to sing at the Harvest Festival. They sang 'Caulifowers Fluffy' - a firm favourite, 'Whe I Needed a Neighbour' plus 'Father we Love You' which celebrates the Trinity.

There were some super comments from the congregation who really love to welcome the children and their families to the services.
